History

Super Mario World hides a second map, the Star Road, behind exits that a straight run to Bowser never needs. Many stages have a normal exit and a secret one, and only the secret exit redraws the map.

It was a launch title for the Super Nintendo, directed by Shigeru Miyamoto with Takashi Tezuka, and it introduced Yoshi as a mount that can eat enemies and, with a shell color, gain a new ability. A cape replaces the raccoon tail and lets Mario fly if the player builds speed.

The ghost houses, the forest of illusion, and the secret exits made the world map a puzzle of its own. Koji Kondo's overworld theme is the melody most people still hum when they picture the game.

Later 2D Mario games, from Yoshi's Island to the New Super Mario Bros. line, keep answering this map, this dinosaur, and these exits. This page is the original Super Mario World, not those follow-ups.
