History

Richard Garriott's Avatar meets a gargoyle conflict in Origin's Ultima VI: The False Prophet, a 1990 computer quest. The gargoyles are not a mindless camp; the plot asks whether the Avatar has been attacking a people with its own shrine.

The Super Nintendo release is a later, heavily altered home version. Conversations shrink, and the mouse-driven party of the computer game becomes something a pad can manage.

Britannia's shrines and the gargoyle side of the war are the story being altered, not replaced with a different hero. Players of the computer original meet a changed interface and a cut script on the cartridge.
