Subspace vegetables and a four-person cast define Super Mario Bros. 2, the Western sequel built from a different Japanese game. Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach pick up Shy Guys and throw them, and Birdo spits eggs that can be thrown back.
Peach's float and Luigi's jump make the same stage a different route. Wart waits at the end of Subcon, and the dream framing explains why the enemies are not Goombas.
The game sits between the original and Super Mario Bros. 3, and it later returned inside Super Mario All-Stars. It reached players in 1988, already a reskin of Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic rather than a harder copy of the first Mario.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
