History

Super Mario Bros. turned a running jump, a fire flower, and a flagpole into the pattern later Mario games still answer. Pipes, brick blocks, and a flagpole at the end of a short stage became the language of the series.

Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka built it at Nintendo with Koji Kondo's looping themes, after the team had already made the single-screen Mario Bros. arcade. Warp zones, a hidden 1-Up in a block, and the minus world glitch gave players secrets to trade in schoolyards.

The princess-rescue plot is short on purpose. The design work is in the enemy mix: Goombas, Koopa Troopas that become shells, and Bowser's false bridges. A timer forces the run to stay short, which is why speedrunners still treat the cartridge as a measured dash.

Nintendo later folded the same stages into Super Mario All-Stars and into handheld remakes. Those editions are other entries. This page is the original side-scrolling Super Mario Bros.
