Vic Viper's selectable power bar is the system Konami introduced in Gradius, also sold as Nemesis. Speed, missiles, a double shot, a laser, an Option satellite, or a shield waits in a queue until the pilot arms it.
The 1985 arcade shooter scrolls left to right through cores, volcanoes, and bacterian fleets. Dying empties the bar, which is why a fresh life feels suddenly fragile.
The NES port is real and keeps that left-to-right upgrade path. Options still trail the Vic Viper, and the same bar still decides what the next capsule will arm.
