Shared tanks and destructible bricks fill Battle City, Namco's Famicom game descended from Tank Battalion. Two players can occupy one screen, shooting walls to open a lane and defending the base at the bottom.
Namco released it in 1985, and it was a Japanese hit. Many Western players met the bricks and the two-player screen only in later reissues, not as a contemporary NES blockbuster.
Tank Battalion is the ancestor of the cannon-and-brick rules. Battle City is the Famicom game that put two tanks on that shared screen.
