Handlebar cabinets steer the bicycle in Paperboy, Atari Games' route past dogs, skateboards, and broken windows. Subscribers on one side of the street want the paper, and a smashed pane on the other side is a different kind of point.
The 1985 arcade machine made the handlebars part of its identity. The paper has to hit the porch, and a missed throw or a collision ends the morning.
The NES port has none of those handlebars. It keeps the suburban street, the dogs, and the windows, and it leaves the cabinet's unique control behind.
