History
Pokemon Gold moves the journey to Johto, where a real-time clock changes which creatures are awake. Johto's gym leaders keep different hours, so the same route is a different hunt after dark.
Game Freak, still led creatively by Satoshi Tajiri with music from Junichi Masuda, added breeding, held items, and a day-night cycle the first pair could not show on a monochrome screen. The player starts in New Bark Town, crosses gyms in a new region, and then finds the original Kanto map waiting after the league.
Gold and Silver were sold as a matched pair with different legendary beasts. Crystal later retold the same Johto trip with a playable girl and the Suicune story, and that revision has its own page. HeartGold, years afterward on a dual screen, is a remake rather than this cartridge.
The internal battery that kept the clock running is part of the object's history: when the battery dies, time stops and some events freeze. Collectors still look for carts whose clocks survive.
