Course parts from several Mario eras snap together in Super Mario Maker. Nintendo's 2015 tool was the first course editor that let players upload 2D Mario stages in classic styles.
Ground, pipes, and enemies from the NES, SNES, and later side-scrollers share one grid, and a clear-check forces the maker to finish the level before sharing it. Costumes and the GamePad's draw tools are part of building, not a separate game mode pasted on top.
Super Mario Maker 2 on Switch is a sequel, not this tool. The Wii U editor, and the 3DS sharing of those courses, is the first upload workshop.
