Ordinary townspeople join the party, and Citizens of Earth is the turn-based joke about recruiting a barista, a farmer, and a conspiracy crank. A barista in the party is a combatant, which is the census joke under the turn order.
The player character is less a chosen warrior than a politician who sends constituents into battle. Each new neighbor brings a role, so the roster is a census instead of a band of knights.
That census of odd fighters reached both the successor console and the glasses-free handheld in 2015 with the barista still in the roster. Winning a fight still uses classic turns, but the victory screen looks like a neighborhood directory.
