History

Interplay kept ordinary chess laws in Battle Chess and then staged every capture as a fight. A queen does not vanish quietly; she duels the piece she takes, and the board waits until the animation ends.

The 1988 computer original sold the joke of living pieces on a medieval board. Knights, rooks, and pawns each get their own combat sketch, while checkmate still follows the standard rules.

The NES version is a home port of that computer novelty. The same animated captures play on the cartridge, slowed by how much cartoon the console can show.
