History

Dropped gloves turn a hockey stoppage into a punching match in Blades of Steel (1988), Konami's arcade ice game. The fight is a separate screen, and the winner of the fists returns to the period with the momentum.

Fast periods and body checks keep the match short and rough. A penalty brawl is not a menu statistic, because the player throws the punches.

The NES port keeps those fast periods and the glove-drop fights. Konami's cabinet made the boxing detour part of hockey, and the home cart preserves it.
