Marian waits at the end of a gang's alley in Double Dragon, Technos' side-scrolling brawler about punching through the Black Warriors. Billy and Jimmy Lee use elbows, kicks, and throws, and Abobo is the giant who blocks an early stretch.
The NES port is the home version many players met first. The cabinet exists, but a large audience learned the Lees and Marian's kidnapping from the cartridge.
Technos's brawler reached that NES audience in 1988, and the gang, the brothers, and Marian's kidnapping are the plot. The home cart is how a lot of players threw the first punch.
