History

Master Emerald duty is playable in Sonic & Knuckles, Sega's 1994 Genesis cartridge famous for a lock-on port that clips Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 on top. Knuckles glides and climbs in his own route, and the lock-on is how Hidden Palace and the rest of the combined quest were meant to be seen.

Later compilations keep that team-up, including releases on the GameCube and Wii. Without a second cartridge clicked into the port, you still get Knuckles' standalone journey and the Death Egg waiting at the end of it.

The hardware trick is the legacy. Compilations preserve the team-up the plastic port invented, with Knuckles as a lead rather than a trap.
