Extreme Gear, a hoverboard, replaces the footrace in Sonic Riders. Sonic Team's 2006 racing game drafts behind a rival to refill air, and the Babylon Rogues, led by Jet the Hawk, are the reason the boards exist.
Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles still run, but a grind rail and a turbulence pocket matter more than a spin dash. Courses in the city and the desert are race tracks first, and running out of air is how a board drops out of the pack.
