Super Mario Galaxy 2 returns to small planets and then hands Mario a dinosaur the first Galaxy did not have. A world map replaces the first journey's observatory, and Yoshi joins the gravity tricks.
Yoshiaki Koizumi directed it at Nintendo EAD Tokyo as a sequel with a world map, Bowser Jr. as a recurring chaser, and Yoshi, whose tongue and flutter jump change how round platforms work. The hub is a face-shaped starship rather than the first game's observatory and Rosalina story.
Green stars, found after the main path, send the player back through stages for one more comet. The drill, the rock, and the cloud flower are tools that exist for a handful of galaxies and then leave, which keeps the toy box rotating.
It is not a level pack inside the first Super Mario Galaxy. A later Wii U reminder of the Wii library is not assumed here. Lubba's starship and the green-star mop-up are the sequel's own frame, not a menu inside the first Galaxy.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
