History

An island hub ties three vehicle types together in Diddy Kong Racing. Karts, hovercraft, and planes share Timber's Island, and each world ends with a boss rather than a simple cup trophy.

Rare shipped the Nintendo 64 racer in 1997, the same generation as Mario Kart 64 and a direct rival for the living-room race. Taj the genie, T.T.'s challenges, and Wizpig give the adventure a campaign the pure cup structure does not.

Balloons feed a boost, and bananas are a weapon. Switching from a plane back to a kart for a boss rematch is the loop Rare built into the hub.
