History

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past splits Hyrule into a light world and a dark world that share one map. A tool you win in one dungeon is the key that makes an earlier screen suddenly traversable.

Nintendo's team, with Shigeru Miyamoto producing and Takashi Tezuka directing, built each dungeon around a single tool: a hookshot, a hammer, a cane. The Master Sword is the hinge of the story, pulled once the three pendants are found, and then the same kingdom turns hostile.

The opening, with Link woken in the rain and sent after Zelda through the castle sewers, is more plotted than the first Zelda, yet the player can still wander. The flute, the magic medallions, and the bottle collection became the series' inventory language.

A Game Boy Advance port added a small extra quest. The 2019 Link's Awakening remake and the 2013 A Link Between Worlds are different games. This page is the Super Nintendo original.
