History

Cecil Harvey's dark-knight guilt drives Final Fantasy IV (1991), the Super Famicom story that introduced the Active Time Battle gauge. Kain, Rosa, and Rydia join and leave, and Golbez's hold on the crystals is the threat above Baron.

The gauge fills even while the player is reading a menu, so a slow choice is a real delay. Cecil's path from dark knight toward paladin is the character arc the battles are hung on.

North America retitled this game Final Fantasy II. It is the real fourth story, Cecil's, and not a sequel to the American numbering that had skipped chapters.
