History

Samus hunts metroids down a vertical nest in Metroid II: Return of Samus, and a battery save was new for the series. Nintendo's Game Boy Metroid from 1991 is the mission that Samus Returns on the 3DS, and later games, revisit.

A counter of remaining creatures drops as each larva falls, and rising lava opens a deeper shaft on SR388. The spider ball joins the morph ball in those tunnels.

The 3DS retelling walks this same hunt with a new camera. The Game Boy cartridge is the first version of the descent.
