History

Capcom's arcade original Bionic Commando (1987) introduced the grappling-arm soldier that the NES game, where he cannot jump, made famous. A later handheld cartridge reused the name for a different release.

The arm latches a ceiling and swings the commando across a gap no hop could cover. Enemy soldiers and a sci-fi fortress fill the arcade stages that taught that swing.

The NES adaptation, with its no-jump rule and its own plot, is the home game many players mean. The arcade cabinet is where the bionic arm first showed up.
