Bub and Bob trap foes in bubbles they can burst in Bubble Bobble (1986), Taito's rescue of two kidnapped girlfriends. Fukio Mitsuji directed the cave of dinosaurs, potions, and fruit that falls when a round is cleared quickly.
The two brothers, transformed into dinosaurs, blow bubbles and then pop them to turn a captured pest into a bonus. A potion changes the bubble's effect, which is how a stuck room gets a new verb.
The NES port keeps that two-dinosaur rescue. Bub, Bob, the bubbles, and the girlfriends are Mitsuji's arcade scene, carried onto the cartridge.
