History

Nine-ball racks and a trick-shot challenge share the table in Side Pocket (1986), Data East's pocket billiards. English on the cue ball and the order of the rack are the skills, not a fictional athlete's story.

Arcade cabinets came first and established the table, the nine-ball sets, and the trick-shot mode. A missed cushion or a scratched shot ends the problem the way a real table would.

NES and later 16-bit versions kept that same table rather than inventing a new rule set. Data East's billiards is the through-line, from the cabinet to the home carts.
