Irem's side-scroller R-Type (1987) is remembered for the Force, a detachable pod that shields the ship and powers its shot. The arcade cabinet came first, and home versions followed.
The R-9 docks the Force, then sends it ahead to cover a Bydo creature the main cannon should not face up close. A charge builds while the pod stays attached, the rhythm the opening stage teaches.
Dobkeratops, the battleship-beast at the end of that first run, became the series' postcard boss. Later home carts, handheld ones included, chase the cabinet's Force.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
