History

Yuji Horii, with Akira Toriyama, Koichi Sugiyama, and Chunsoft, made Enix's Dragon Quest (1986) the template for Japanese console RPGs. A lone hero crosses a top-down land, buys better gear in town, and grinds slimes until a cave is survivable.

Menu battles, a king who sends you outward, and the Dragonlord at the end became the pattern other parties copied. Alefgard's bridges are small, and the danger comes from how hard a random encounter hits.

North America received it in 1989 as Dragon Warrior. That renamed release is the same cave-to-castle march, slime and all.
