Chapter cards introduce other heroes before the main quest in DRAGON QUEST IV, Enix's Famicom RPG led again by Horii, Toriyama, and Sugiyama. Ragnar, Alena, Torneko, and the twin fortune-tellers each travel before the hero's own chapter begins.
Those opening chapters are playable stories, not a menu of biographies. Toriyama's characters and Sugiyama's motifs change with the hero of the hour, then the party finally converges.
The 1990 Famicom release used that structure, and the US name was Dragon Warrior IV. Psaro's threat sits over all of the chapters, but the early hours belong to the side heroes.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
