History

Taito turned Breakout into Arkanoid (1986) by putting the player in a ship called the Vaus. Capsules fall from cracked bricks and briefly change the Vaus, the ball, or the barrier.

A short escape story frames the bricks as a prison the Vaus is trying to leave. The energy ball still has to clear every tile, so the old brick-breaking rhythm sits underneath the capsules.

The NES edition can swap the ordinary pad for a dedicated paddle controller. That paddle lets the Vaus track the ball the way the arcade dial did.
