History

Living caverns inside a planet form Life Force, the Western name for Konami's Salamander, a shooter spun off from Gradius. Organic walls and biomechanical bosses replace a purely mechanical fortress, and the NES version adds a Gradius-style power bar.

Konami's spinoff dates to 1986, and the living planet is the setting. The power bar on the NES cart lets the ship upgrade in the Gradius manner while the scenery stays organic.

Salamander is the name on the Japanese side of that idea. Life Force is the Western title for the same living-planet shooter, with the NES power bar as the home version's twist.
