History

Eight virtues, from honesty to humility, are the quest in Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, Richard Garriott's demand that the player live the code. Lord British's Britannia asks for conduct, not only for a lich's death, and the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom waits on that conduct.

Origin published the computer RPG in 1985, and shrines and mantras teach the virtues as systems. The party's example matters more than a closing paragraph about a dead lich.

The NES port is a later adaptation of that computer RPG. The Avatar, the eight virtues, and Britannia are Garriott's design, carried onto the cartridge afterward.
