Falling tetrominoes lock into complete lines in Tetris (1984), the puzzle Alexey Pajitnov designed in Moscow. A straight bar, a square, and the awkward S shapes are the whole vocabulary, and a filled line is the only way to breathe.
Pajitnov's first version is the one this title points at. The Soviet design stacks the pieces until the well overflows, with no Nintendo mascot in the well.
Nintendo's Game Boy edition is a later licensed hit, not this first version. The Moscow stacking game and the handheld phenomenon share the tetrominoes and do not share a birthplace.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
The series list above is the whole family set in this catalog.
