Jordan Mechner made Karateka (1985) on the Apple II before Prince of Persia, and Broderbund published it. A fighter runs toward a palace, and every guard is a one-on-one bout that ends when one stance breaks.
The computer original is from 1984, with punches Mechner filmed and traced into the animation. Charge the captive princess in a fighting stance and she kicks the rescuer, so the last door is a test of manners.
An NES port came later. The palace duels, the rotoscoped strikes, and that final mistake with the princess remain the scene people mean by the name.
