Sonic Team smashed color blobs into falling tetrominoes in Puyo Puyo Tetris, a 2014 versus puzzle that reached Nintendo 3DS. One well clears groups of four matching Puyos, and the other clears completed lines.
Swap, Fusion, and Party are among the rule sets that mix the two boards. A match can flip which rule you are stuck with before the round ends.
