History

Williams and Eugene Jarvis followed Defender with Stargate in 1981, a space shooter later sold as Defender II. Humanoids still need rescuing, and the ship still faces a planet's surface rather than a castle's corridors.

It is not a Super Nintendo platformer and not the 1994 film that reused the name. Landers, mutants, and the warp gate belong to the arcade sequel, with the same frantic reversal of direction Defender taught.

The film's Egypt and the cartridge people might imagine from the title are unrelated. Jarvis's gate, the astronauts, and the Defender-style planet are the actual machine.
