Joe Musashi rescues kidnapped children in Shinobi (1988), the home cartridge of Sega's arcade mission. Shuriken and a short jump carry him through hostage rooms that the coin-op had already staged.
Sega's arcade Shinobi arrived in 1987, and that cabinet is the first appearance of Musashi's rescue. The home title's parenthetical date marks the port, not the birth of the mission.
Hostages in the line of fire change how a room is cleared. The cartridge is a port of the coin-op, and the children Musashi is there to save are the objective the arcade already used.
