History

Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick built Maniac Mansion at Lucasfilm Games around a verb menu and a haunted house. Players pick a pair of kids, and each kid's quirks open different jokes inside Dr. Fred's rooms.

SCUMM, the scripting system written for that 1987 project, let later Lucasfilm adventures reuse the same engine. A meteor, a kidnapped cheerleader, and a purple tentacle give the house its plot.

Jaleco's NES cartridge keeps the room layout while censoring some of the computer version's jokes. The mansion is still explored by swapping characters rather than by fighting through a corridor.
