History

Square fielded customizable wanzer mechs in Front Mission: The First (1995), a Super Famicom strategy game of parts and pilots. Legs, arms, and a body are separate components, so a slow cannon build and a fast melee build can share a squad.

Later remakes reused the subtitle The First for this same story. The Huffman conflict and the wanzer garage are the campaign those remakes keep retelling.

A mission is a grid of mechs, not a menu of soldier sprites. Swapping an arm after a bad drop is the customization the subtitle's story is built around.
