A Kickstarter brought the half-genie back in high definition, and Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is WayForward's return to transformation dances. The dance that buys a new form is performed in town before the dungeon gap will allow it.
Hair whips clear the foreground, then a dance turns Shantae into a form that can cross the next gap. Risky Boots and the baron's machines supply the bosses across stages that look like animated cartoons.
The successor console was one of the 2016 launch platforms. Buying the dances in town, then applying them in a dungeon, still structures the map.
