History

A punch from the handlebar defines Road Rash (1991), Electronic Arts' Genesis motorcycle race where police join the chase. That 16-bit game is the series identity, and Game Boy versions are later, smaller offshoots.

A chain or a bare fist comes off the handlebar when a rival pulls alongside. Race winnings buy a faster bike, and an officer on the shoulder can end the run.

The Genesis road, with its roadside weapons, is the one players mean by the name. Handheld editions shrink that punch-and-ride idea onto a narrower street.
