A mask that grants miracles draws young Hershel and Randall through the carnival city of Monte d'Or in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the Level-5 prequel Nintendo published in 2012. Riddles appear as solid dioramas the stylus can turn and poke. The case is set before the gentleman detective's later fame, back when the two of them were students of ruins and tricks.
Hint coins let a stuck player move on, though the story would rather have an answer. Block slides, drawn routes, and questions about crowds fit a city obsessed with wonders. The miracles look impossible until the investigation catches the mask up.
Randall's ambition and Hershel's caution put the strain into the flashbacks. A later walk down the same streets ties the boys' expedition to the disasters hitting Monte d'Or now. Extra riddles hide in corners for anyone who wants more than the critical path.
Level-5 built the case and Nintendo published the handheld edition. Voiced scenes frame a mystery about what the two friends owed each other, and finishing it means answering both the street wonders and the older dig that uncovered the artifact.
