History

Mark Cerny designed the isometric race Marble Madness for Atari Games, a trackball cabinet that rolls one marble down ramps. Rails, catapults, and acid pools punish a marble that leaves the narrow course.

The 1984 arcade machine made the trackball the way the marble was steered. Speed and a short timer matter as much as staying on the geometry.

Home versions followed that cabinet, including an NES port of the same courses. The marble, the isometric drop, and Cerny's ramps are the game, whether the control is a trackball or a pad.
