History

A jetpack hangs over a single screen in Dropzone (1984), where Archer MacLean follows the Defender tradition. Scientists wait on the ground while aliens swarm the moment a rescue hesitates.

Thrust, a laser, and a grab are the controls, and the ground is where the people you are saving stand. Lose them, or crash the pack into the dirt, and the wave has already won.

MacLean's precision is the reputation: tight gravity, a crowded screen, and no scrolling world to hide in. Defender's sweep is the ancestor; the jetpack and the Atari keyboard scene are this game's own life.
