History

Buoys, not banners, judge the line in Wave Race 64. A missed red buoy drops the whole heat. Miss the colored markers on a jet ski and the judges cut the score, while the water itself lifts or buries the hull.

Nintendo shipped the racer in the Nintendo 64 launch window of 1996, as a showcase of moving waves rather than a mascot tour. Dolphin Park and stormier courses change how the same buoy gate should be taken.

Later sequels are separate. The original's trick is the swell: a jump off a crest can clear a gate that a flat-water line would clip.
