Blackthorn's reign replaces Lord British in Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny, and the Avatar has to oppose the usurper. Richard Garriott's virtue-based world continues, with the Shadowlords pressing the same Britannia the earlier quest had asked players to embody.
Origin published the computer RPG in 1988, and the codex and the shrines give Blackthorn's law a system. The tyranny is more than a dark castle on the edge of Britannia.
The NES port carries that computer story forward. The Avatar, Lord British's absence, and Blackthorn are the political crisis the cartridge is adapting.
