History

Richard Garriott's first role-playing game in the line is what Ultima (Old) points at, the Apple II original that opened the series. That computer quest dates to 1981 and begins the Britannia saga the later games expand.

A top-down party, a dungeon stair, and the wizard Mondain set a pattern the numbered sequels elaborate. Sosaria's dark floors on that Apple II disk are the rooms the series grows out of.

Later Ultimas add virtues, a living countryside, and the name Britannia in full. Ultima (Old) is the label for that Apple II start.
