History

Tractor beams capture a ship in Galaga (1981), and a rescued second fighter doubles the fire. Namco followed Galaxian with that kidnapping, so losing a ship to the beam can become an advantage if the player wins it back.

Challenging stages break the formation for a bonus pattern. The dual fighter, once recovered, fills the screen with a wider shot than the single cannon.

The NES version is a later port of that arcade shooter. The tractor beam and the doubled ship are Namco's sequel idea, and the home cart is carrying the beam across years.
