History

Masahiro Sakurai and HAL Laboratory knock familiar heroes off the stage in Super Smash Bros. (1999) instead of draining a life bar. Damage climbs as a percent, and a strong hit sends Mario, Link, Pikachu, or whoever is lighter flying past a blast line.

It is the first game in the series and a Nintendo 64 original. The starting roster includes Samus, Fox, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Kirby, and the rest of that first dozen, each with a few moves rather than a long command list.

Items drop onto floating platforms, and a home-run bat can end a stock in one swing. Later Smash games change the physics and the roster; this cartridge is the percent-and-platform original.
