History

Earthworm Jim 3D moves the worm into a Nintendo 64 space in 1999, made by a different team than Shiny's side-scrollers. The cow, the pocket, and the cartoon violence of the flat games give way to a polygonal playground that reviewers treated much more coldly.

Reviews were harsher than they had been for the 16-bit run. Jumping puzzles and a lost-in-his-own-mind frame replace the tight stages Shiny had built around a plasma gun and a hamster.

The name on the box is the worm people already knew. The team, the camera, and the colder reception are what separate this 3D outing from those side-view cartridges.
