History

Square's charge gauge defines combat in Secret of Mana. Randi plants his feet, the weapon meter fills, and the swing that follows is a different attack from a hurried tap.

Primm and Popoi join the Mana Sword bearer, and a second player can drop onto a spare controller. In 1993 that real-time party, with a ring menu pausing the field, was the Mana journey that reached the widest SNES audience, between the Game Boy predecessor and later sequels.

Co-op changes who watches the charge. One player can keep a spell coming while another holds a stance, which the menu-driven battles of Square's turn-based hits never asked for.
