History

Sensible Software joked that war has never been so much fun, then sent named soldiers to die for good in Cannon Fodder. Jon Hare's team made it first for the Amiga in 1993, and a hill of graves fills with every private the player spends.

The tiny troopers shoot, grenade, and split into squads across a scrolling field. A soldier who falls does not respawn; the next mission recruits a fresh name, and the old one stays on the hill.

The Super Nintendo cartridge and a much later Game Boy Color edition carry that same cruel joke. The phrase, the graves, and the unreturning privates are the design, not a realistic officer school.
