History

Haohmaru's sword and a rage gauge define SNK's Samurai Shodown, a weapon-based Neo Geo fighter from 1993 already. A heavy slash is slower than a kick, and the rage gauge changes the duel once a fighter has taken enough damage.

Slash or bust, the choice of stance, alters reach. Genjuro and Nakoruru bring different blades and speeds, so the match is about spacing a weapon, not throwing an identical punch.

Super Nintendo and Game Boy ports followed the arcade game. The rage gauge and Haohmaru's upper slash are what those ports were trying to keep.
